these images are ones i was going to use in my final designs, however i didnt pick the designs that these would of been suitable for, for my final designs.

the first design is for an advertisment for a magazine.

the second piece is a leaflet for the company

and the third is a business card. the top is the front of the card and the bottom is the back of the card.

This Advert containing a children’s computer game character is quite clever as it is saying to the children if you want to grown big & strong then drink milk. This particular advert is also a explicit advert as it gets the message across and there is no hidden meaning behind it.

to start off the topic on advertising i am going to look at what makes good advertising and what is advertising. The reason for doing this is because i want to get a better understanding about advertising before i move on to my own piece. In my initial research i will also look at different types of advertising such as print advertising, outdoor advertising, web advertising and product advertising. The reason i will look at these is because i believe that they will help when i come to developing my idea. I am also going to look at explicit and implicit advertising again to see if i can get a better understanding of how each one works, i will also look at how celebrities are used in advertising and advertising a brand or a campaign.

After researching different aspects of advertising i will move on to research art movements and specific artists which i feel with fit in with the way i want my designs to go.

Image manipulation hasn’t just occured since the invention of the computers, image manipulation has been arund a long time and was in fact used before the computer. In te early days of photo manipulation photographers used double-exposure, multiple negatives for one image in the darkroom, scratching poloroids andto retouch an image they used ink and paint. The first image manipulation that was recorded was of Abraham Lincoln’s head on the body of John.c.Calhoun. This image was recorded in the 1860′s.

Image manipulation is now recognized as an art form.

This is a car advertisement for BMW. This shows them mentioning another big car company audi on there success  for winning the south African car of the year 2006, however BMW then say “from the winner of world car of the year 2006″. What the advertisers have tried to get across to the consumer is that BMW is the better car. They have done this with implicit advertising. In the advert the background is blurred out like distorted so it draws the audience in to the actual main image which is the car. I don’t think this advert hits the younger audience more i think it is mainly aimed for the more mature audience.

The next example of car advertment i have chose if the one for Subaru. I chose this one as i think that the advertisers have done something totally diferent with this advert and it draws the audience in. This advert is also a implicit advert. The advertisers say that the car is ugly that is what draws the audience in. I think this advert is implicit as it wants the audience to make their own mind up about the look of the car. I think its that aspect of the advert that makes the audience take note and i feel that’s what draws the audience in.

in this tutorial about Photoshop i learned how to layer images and also how to change the brightness and the contrast of the photo in Photoshop. i found this tutorial useful as i learnt these skills which i didnt know how to do before.

To edit this photo in Photoshop i first uploaded the photo by clicking the file drop down and then selecting open.
Once i had opened the image i then played around with the tools to see how i could transform the image.
I first selected the filter drop down and from this i then selected light & shadow, then moved across to the supernova and this allowed me then to add a light in the top left hand corner of he image. Making it look like there is a sun in the image.

This is the first stage of my photo editing.

In the second stage of editing the image i went back to the filter drop down , then down to the distorts, then moved across to IWARP and this allowed me to warp the parts of the image i wanted to warp.

This is the second stage of my photo editing.

I then went to filters again then back down to the distort’s option then across to whirl and pinch. this tool allowed me to select part of the image i wanted to curl around and how much of the image i wanted to curl. I liked this tool as it allowed me to transform the image completely making it look totally different to the original image. This is now how the image looks.

Third stage.

 
After warping the image i went to the “colours” drop down. Then scrolled down to “curves”. This option then allowed me to adjust the colour of the image, making the contrast of the image much better. It also allowed me make the image darker and lighter. I found this tool very useful as i could make the colour in the image much richer. In this stage i also went back to the filter drop down and added a “fuzzy border” to my image.

Stage four.

 
After stage four i went to stage five, at stage five i went to the toolbox on the left hand side and selected the smudge tool. With this i proceeded to smug the top half of my image and the bottom half of the image, leaving the middle half out. I felt this gae it a good effect and i like the way the image now looks.

Stage five.

I feel the lesson on Photoshop has tought me quite a bit. As i can now do things that i couldn’t before. In the lesson i learnt new techniques and it gave me chance to get familiar with the tools of Photoshop and how Photoshop worked. Before this lesson i dont think i would have been able to have changed the picture like i have done, because before i didn’t know how to use Photoshop. I think my image has turned out quite well and i feel it has totally transformed from the main image it was. However i feel if i had more time i would have carried on and maybe made the image better maybe changing the colours in the image and editing more than i have already.

Here are a few facts that i have found out about Man Ray during my research:

• 1890 – Man Ray was born in Philadelphia, USA.
• Man Ray’s real name is Emmanuel Rudnitsky.
• He stopped believing that painting was an absolute form of expression.
• In 1904 Man Ray takes lessons in still life.
• in 1913-14 Man Ray paints a work entitled AD MCMXIV, inspired by Paolo Uccello.
• 1919 he publishes the first and only issue TNT, an anarchist review.
• 1941- Began his masques series.
• 1948 paints Shakespeare’s equation series. 
• 1951 he experiments with colored photography.
• 1961 receives a gold medal for photography at the Venice Biennale. 
• 1963 publishes first autobiography entitled Self Portrait.
• Man Ray as part of the DaDa movement, from 1916-1924.                                         

        What Was The DaDa Movement?
         DaDa was a protest by  group of 
         European artist’s against World 
         War 1. The founders of the DaDa
         movement were French artist Jean 
        Arp and the writers Hugo Ball and
        Tristan Tzara. DaDa movement evolved
         in to  Surrealism in the 1920′s. 

• Man Ray grew up in America, But spent most of his greater part of his life in   Paris, France.
• Man Ray studied in several art forms including painting, sculpture, collage, constructed objects and photography. 
     
• Man Ray grew up in New Jersey and became a commercial artist in New York in the 1910′s. 

   Man Ray was disappointed that he was only recognised for his photography in America rather than his filmmaking and                                                          painting.

• When Man Ray moved to Paris in 1921 he set up a photography shop to support himself.
• When Man Ray dies in Paris in 1976 he left behind thousands of photography’s that reflected the life and work of one of the most important artist in the 20th century.
